HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS PATONG

This 280-room hotel is located near Patong Beach in Phuket. It is one of the first Holiday Inn Express (HIEX) developments on the island, with a resort rather than city hotel atmosphere.

The existing land was a coconut farm. The hotel is inserted between the coconut palms to generate a relationship between human space and nature, with guestrooms facing a farm in which coconut palms are the main component. The hotel is conceived as sitting within a grove of coconut palms.

As HIEX is a budget hotel, the project required a simple design that was functional and whose architectural elements met cost constraints. The concepts behind these architectural elements are as follows:

Purple color: this color not only happened to be a personal favorite of the client, but is appropriate to the area, representing the vibrant nightlife of Patong Beach. The exact color that was selected has become emblematic of the hotel.

Wall texture: a unique pattern was created and embossed onto concrete surfaces throughout the project, used in combination with areas of plain surface. This composition also became important to the project’s overall identity.

Timber cladding: timber was used introduced to interior areas intimate to guests. The building exterior also features areas of timber cladding and components, connecting to the nature of the coconut grove. This is seen in the columns at ground-floor level, as well as the soffit and party wall to guest room balconies.

The warm timber color contrasts with the hardness of the gray concrete wall and complements the purple hue, bringing a relaxed atmosphere to the development.

These design elements were used in various combinations throughout the hotel. Together they celebrate both the joyful exuberance of Patong and the concept of the tranquil hotel within the coconut grove.
